Daytona Beach, FL - Bethune-Cookman University wants $7.5 million by the summer of 2020 as part of its efforts to keep its doors open.
That message can be found in a recently published video by the school's communications department, featuring Interim President Hubert Grimes.
In the video, Grimes speaks about the school's current status when it comes to their probation and the steps the institution is taking to remediate the situation.
Grimes details that school is working towards addressing three different issues brought up by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
According to Grimes, some of the issues addressed include some of the core requirements of SACSCOC institutions including integrity, governing board characteristics, financial resources, financial responsibility and control of finances.
At the end of the video, a message can be seen showing the school asking for financial help, saying:
"In order to eliminate our operating deficit and restore the University's endowment, we need your financial support in helping raise $7.5 million by June 30, 2020. More details on the campaign to come."
All this comes as the school told university employees about salary cuts, layoffs and unpaid furloughs starting as soon as this week.
Grimes has spoken to the media before about the school's effort to resolve some of their issues, including last week (January 11th) when he stated the school has hired an expert to fix some of those problems.
It was at that same press conference that board member Belvin Perry said he would make a motion to remove Chairwoman Michelle Carter-Scott from the Board of Trustees and ensure that she be barred from "ever serving again"
