Volusia County, FL - An award ceremony was held today to honor the courage of emergency personnel who helped a lightning strike victim and their family on June 24.
"We had an unfortunate tragedy on June 24th," said Volusia County Beach Safety Sr. Captain Tammy Marris. A woman was struck by lightning on the beach and killed. The friend she was on the beach with was also struck, along with a bystander. Those 2 survived and as far as Marris knows they're doing well.
"Unfortunately it was witnessed by her daughter," said Marris. A lot of emergency personnel were involved in this incident. All 3 of the lightning strike victims were treated, and the daughter who witnessed her mother's death was severely distraught and was brought to the hospital. Marris said, "it was a very tragic situation."
Around 8 people were awarded in the ceremony. Personnel from Daytona Bach Shores Public Safety, Volusia County Beach Safety, and Lifeguards were all honored.
