Ways To Remember With 9/11 Events Around Volusia County

Below are community events happening around Volusia County to remember the events that took place on 9/11.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – For the 11th straight year, the “Drive to Donate,” one of the state’s longest and most successful blood drives, will return to Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, Sept. 10. The “World Center of Racing” and OneBlood, which began the blood drive as a tribute to the victims of September 11, will bring together the Central Florida community to give the, “Gift of Life.”

Over the past 10 years, the “Drive to Donate” has collected more than 4,700 units of blood. This year’s “Drive to Donate” blood drive, which is also receiving support from Orlando NBC television affiliate WESH Ch. 2, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. inside the DAYTONA 500 Club located in the infield. Donors can enter the Speedway through Gate 40 and the Turn 1 tunnel, located off of Williamson Blvd.

Every guest that donates will receive:

  • A free general admission stadium ticket to the 2017 Subway Firecracker 250 Powered By Coca-Cola NASCAR XFINITY Series race (must be redeemed by May 1, 2017)
  • Special edition T-shirt
  • Wellness checkup
  • Entry to win a DAYTONA 500 Club package for two for the 2017 DAYTONA 500, if a minimum of 500 units of blood are collected
  • A chance to win a 2017 Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola package for two in the DAYTONA 500 Club, if a minimum of 900 units of blood are collected

Palm Coast – The City of Palm Coast Fallen Heroes Memorial honoring emergency responders killed during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will take place at Heroes Memorial Park on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 8 a.m.

The Fallen Heroes Memorial recognizes the selfless acts of courage exemplified by the members of the Police, Fire and EMS departments. It will be held at Heroes Memorial Park, 2860 Palm Coast Pkwy. NW, Palm Coast (1/2 mile west of the Flagler County Library). The public is encouraged to attend.

The 9/11 ceremony will feature an Honor Guard compromised of New York, Palm Coast and Flagler County fire departments and law enforcement agencies.  The Honor Guard will join together for the presentation of a Parade of Flags, which is a representation of New York and local emergency service agencies.

The ceremony will include a tribute to firefighters, police officers, paramedics and EMTs, with a presentation of wreaths at the respective memorials by active duty emergency responders and 9/11 survivors.

Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts and retired New York Fire Department Capt. Rich Meo will speak. TheFirefighter Prayer and Police Officer Prayer will be offered by a Palm Coast firefighter and Flagler County Sheriff’s officer. The invocation will be given by Senior Pastor Greg Peters of Parkview Baptist Church. Wreaths will be presented at the park’s memorials. The National Moment of Silence at 8:46 a.m. which marks the time the terrorist attacks began when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the World Trade Center, will be observed.

Please join us in remembering those who lost their lives on 9/11 and honoring all emergency responders. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held at nearby Fire Station 21, 9 Corporate Drive, Palm Coast.

Deltona—The City of Deltona‘s Fire Department will host a dedication ceremony commemorating the events occurring on September 11th, 2001… fifteen years ago.

Visitors are asked to be at Deltona Fire Station 65, by 8:30am, as the actual ceremony will begin at 9:00am with the Fire Department Honor Guard’s flag ceremony.  Invited dignitaries and First Responder representatives will participate in a wreath laying ceremony as part of the commemoration.
