The average price of gas in Florida is on the decline after a sharp uptick in recent months, according to data from AAA. A new report issued Monday morning shows a 29-cent drop over the past week and a 34-cent dip in the last nine days, with the data period covering through Sunday.
The statewide average cost of a gallon of gas was listed as $4.08 as of Sunday's data. That slid slightly lower to $4.06 as of Monday on AAA's state breakdown. Flagler County is a bit higher than the state figure - as it tends to be - with a $4.14 average cost. Volusia County was shown at $4.07, with St. Johns County at $4.14.
Among the top causes for this decline in gas prices appears to be a drop in the cost of crude oil. Prices declined almost 10% over the last week, the report says. In mid-September a barrel of oil was over the dreaded $100 mark, but by Friday it was shown at $91.11.
Though gas is down from mid-September, it's still up from other recent data points. Gas was 13 cents cheaper one month ago, and $1.03 cheaper this time last year. Still, Florida remains under the national average gas cost, listed as $4.37 as of Sunday.
According to user-reported figures on GasBuddy, the cheapest gas in Flagler County as of Monday was at BJ's Wholesale Club on SR-100 ($3.99). This cost is available only to BJ's members, though. The lowest reported price available to the public was the RaceTrac station on Palm Coast Parkway, which was listed at $4.05.
Volusia County's cheapest gas is also primarily available at member-only pumps. The Costco and Sam's Club locations in Daytona Beach were listed at $3.79 respectively. Orange City has pumps at $3.81, while the Daytona Beach Buc-ee's was reported at $3.89. These figures in both counties may change after their most recent reports.
