Port Orange, FL - State and local fire investigators are on the case after firefighters discover a woman's body in a burning home near Sugar Mill Elementary School.

The Port Orange Fire Department responded to the call at 1002 4th Street around 12:30 this morning, finding "extensive" smoke and fire damage, according to Public Information Officer Christine Martindale.

"[The] first arriving firefighters found a heavy smoke and fire condition from the rear portion of the single family house," Martindale added. "[The] fire was quickly knocked down by crews after 35 minutes with an aggressive interior attack."

It was during a secondary sweep of the home when the woman - yet to be identified - was discovered in the bedroom where the fire appeared to have started, per Martindale.

"She was declared dead on scene," Martindale stated. "At this time, the fire does not appear to be suspicious, but the cause is undetermined and under investigation."

An autopsy to officially establish the woman's identity and cause of death is expected later today at the Volusia County Medical Examiner's Office.

City fire crews from Daytona Beach Shores and South Daytona assisted POFD in putting the fire out.
