Volusia County, FL - Voter registration for the primaries ended last week and the vote by mail ballots are already coming in. The primary election takes place August 28 and according to Volusia Elections Supervisor Lisa Lewis, there are newly registered voters, 1,420 Democrats and 1,180 Republicans, that can take part. Lewis said that 2,050 residents registered either with no party affiliation or with a minor political party.  In the primaries, these voters can only vote in non-partisan races. Lewis said that more than 78,000 ballots were mailed out and in the first three days, more than 10% were returned. To make sure your vote counts, don't forget to sign the certificate envelope. Florida is a closed primary state which means you can only vote for candidates in the party you are registered with.  Voted ballots must reach the elections office by 7 p.m. on election night.
