Volusia County School Board To Discuss Medical Marijuana

Posted

Deland, FL- Florida voters legalized medical marijuana in 2016. The Volusia County School District will discuss the drafting of a policy to address the issue in our schools during their regular meeting later this afternoon. Mike Dyer, District General Counsel, said that Florida School Boards have been instructed to implement state law in the adoption of policy and procedure on the student use of medical marijuana. Dyer said the issue is challenging from a legal standpoint because of the conflict between federal and state law as it pertains to marijuana. Dyer said the policy that's been drafted is modeled largely on policies already adopted by Broward and Santa Rosa counties. Those policies do not involve school personnel in administering the medical marijuana but do state that parents designated as "caregiver' by the state, be allowed to do so. Also on today's agenda, several children will be honored for the posters they made for School Bus Safety Week. Community Information Director Kelly Schulz said the children will be getting cash awards.
