Volusia County, FL - Volusia County has funds for groups to host summer camps, and a mandatory workshop will be held on Tuesday afternoon for interested applicants.

The County's Community Assistance Division has funds available for nonprofit organizations, cities, schools, and churches to provide summer camp services. Interested parties must attend an application workshop on Tuesday, January 17. The workshop's scheduled to begin at 1 PM and will be held in the 1st-floor training room of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center at 123 W Indiana Ave in DeLand.

To participate, the group must run a camp that operates from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday, for at least 8 weeks this summer. Camp activities should include supervised playground activities, sports, crafts, and field trips for kids 5 - 12. 5-year-old campers must have completed kindergarten and 12-year-olds have to be going into 6th grade. Camps that serve only special needs children can have campers in high school. Camps are encouraged to give campers healthy food and physical activity.

Applicants need to have proven administrative capacity and they must have at least 1 year of summer camp experience. Also, they must have a minimum of 20 scholarship-eligible children per site before an agreement can be reached with the County.

The funding will be provided between June 5 and July 28 through scholarships which are available to kids whose families are at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.

To apply go to Volusia.org or call Jill Marcum at 286-736-5955, ext. 15593. The application deadline is 4 PM on January 25.

Providers who are interested but missed the mandatory workshop can call Jill Marcum to take part. More information will be released in February for campers and their parents.
