Volusia County, FL-Volusia County Deputy Director of Public Protection Mark Swanson said lifeguards and other emergency personnel are ready for the 4th of July weekend. Swanson was a guest on Volusia Today on WNDB.

Swanson said an extra lifeguard recruiting session a couple of weeks ago brought in 21 more people to have on the lifeguard stands. Operations are really stepped up at this time of year. Swanson said 80 to 90 lifeguards will be on duty every day through the weekend.

Beach visitors are reminded to swim in front of a lifeguard. They are on-duty each morning at 10 A.M. Swanson also suggests getting a yellow wristband for children or at-risk adults. You can get the wristbands from any lifeguard and you can also get them at the hotels along the beach.

Another reminder for beachgoers is to obey the speed limit of 10 mph and stay in the traffic lane if you're driving on the beach. These rules are strictly enforced.
