Volusia County, FL - Scattered showers didn't stop 678 volunteers from collecting thousands of pounds of trash during the 20th annual St. Johns River Cleanup Saturday.

County officials say the total collected was 8,070 pounds of trash from eight sites in and along the river.

According to Hector Valle, an environmental specialist who coordinated the event, the most common items removed were cans, bottles, cups, bags and cigarettes. But the cleanup crews also pulled in some unusual trash, including 22 tires, three old television sets, a shopping cart and mailbox.

Boy Scout Troop 346 of DeLand had the largest delegation with 42 children and adults.

The event is sponsored by Volusia County Environmental Management Division.
