VCSO To Use A Nearly $760,000 State Grant For 911 System Replacement

Volusia County, FL - The Volusia County Sheriff's Office Communications Center is poised to get a replacement for its aging 911 hardware after receiving a $759,709 state grant.

The grant from the State of Florida E911 Board will pay for a complete replacement of the county’s current 6-year-old VIPER 911 call handling equipment and workstations. The new equipment will also use features like text-to-talk 911. The current system was installed in 2012 with no E911 state grant funding. The new system will have an estimated lifespan of about seven years. It also includes the latest Viper 5.1 and Power 911 6.4 software, as well as ECaTS Emergency Call Tracking System, which processes raw 911 data to give law enforcement valuable information. “When our telecommunicators pick up a 911 call, they become the very first of the first responders responsible for getting help to someone in need,” says Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood. “Lives depend on us having the right technology to send help as fast as possible, and I’m grateful to the Florida E911 Board members who granted us the funds we need to do that here in Volusia County.” Photo courtesy of Kaspars Grinvalds and Shutterstock.com
