VCSO: Man Shot Woman In Leg, Fled With Toddler In Van

Deltona, FL - An argument involving at least eight people inside a Deltona home today (September 4th) leads to a woman in the hospital with a bullet wound and the alleged shooter behind bars.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office took 24-year-old Denzel Donald into custody around 20 minutes after a 911 call sent deputies to his girlfriend's home on Blaine Circle in Deltona.

VCSO spokesperson Laura Williams says the call came in just before 4 p.m. from a neighbor who heard gunshots and saw Donald flee the scene in a gold Honda Odyssey with the rear door open and a female toddler inside.

"Donald returned Tuesday to the home to retrieve his girlfriend’s belongings," Williams added. "A group of people confronted him about an unrelated incident that occurred two weeks ago and was not reported to law enforcement."

It's not clear at this point what that unrelated incident was about.

Williams says Donald told detectives he felt those seven people were threatening him, so he went to get his rifle from his van and that's when one of those people - a 41-year-old woman - got into a physical fight with him over the gun.

"Several gunshots were heard during the altercation, which took place in the back of the van," Williams noted. "One shot hit the woman in her right leg."

The neighbor described the van as it fled the scene, which Williams says was key in deputies finding it a short time later.

"The victim was taken to Central Florida Regional in Sanford with injuries considered non-life-threatening," Williams stated. "In addition, a 2-year-old girl was a passenger in the van but was not injured."

It's also not clear at this point what connection the girl has to Donald or anyone else in the home at the time.

Donald is facing at least six charges, including aggravated battery, child neglect and four counts of aggravated assault. Bail information has not been released by Volusia County Jail.

VCJ records show Donald was booked in December 2016 for reckless driving.
