VCSO Deputy Reassigned After NSBHS Gun Incident

New Smyrna Beach, FL - A Volusia County Sheriff's deputy serving as a school resource officer is reassigned to courthouse duty. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a Twitter post that Deputy Anthony Abato is a 'good man who works hard' but 'we just have to be able to stop what we're doing and handle ANY call about a possible gun on or near a school campus with the HIGHEST priority & urgency.'

The transfer comes after an incident at New Smyrna Beach High School last Thursday in which a student was reported by another student to have a gun. The school was put on lockdown. The gun in question turned out to be an Air Soft gun. The incident is under investigation.
