VCSO: Deltona Man Caused 3 Accidents, Injured 2 People

Deltona, FL - A 23-year-old Deltona man ends up in the slammer for causing at least three accidents which sent two people to the hospital.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office arrested Julius Naval Bennett last night near a home on Doyle Road in Deltona, around a mile away from one of the crash scenes.

VCSO spokesman Andrew Gant says Bennett was on foot when deputies caught him because his vehicle stopped working after the third accident.

"Two people were taken to the hospital with injuries after the series of crashes," Gant added. "Luckily, their injuries were non-life-threatening."

The initial call for help came around 8 p.m. near the accident scenes at DeBary Avenue and Main Street. More followed after that with witnesses updating VCSO on where Bennett was going, per Gant.

"Witnesses reported he first rear-ended a red Toyota minivan, causing major damage to the back end," Gant stated. "Bennett fled that crash by driving over the raised median into oncoming traffic."

That's when VCSO thinks he went the wrong direction in the eastbound lanes and slammed into a silver Mazda 6, then hit a black Chevrolet Malibu head-on after leaving the scene of the second accident.

"At that point, his vehicle finally became disabled, and he got out," Gant noted. "The other crash victims told deputies they tried to render aid to Bennett, but he said: '(bleep) this, I hope you die,' and took off running."

Deputies took Bennett to a nearby hospital after he complained of a hurt shoulder, but he soon went to Volusia County Jail after doctors determined he wasn't hurt.

Bennett is held without bond at VCJ. He faces five charges, including leaving the scene of a crash with injury, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage and driving on a suspended license. He was also charged with violating probation on a prior burglary.
