USA Weightlifting Event At Ocean Center This Weekend

Daytona Beach, FL - Expect to see a lot of weightlifters around the Ocean Center this weekend. The USA Weightlifting 2019 American Open Series III competition begins tomorrow (September 13) and finishes up on Sunday. Kelsey Kennedy, USA Weightlifting's Marketing and Content Manager said they expect some 1200 participants. She said in the past, they have had competitors as young as six and as old as 75.

This is the second largest event in USA Weightlifting's history and will feature Youth, Senior and Master levels. Kennedy said that Daytona Beach has played a significant role in weightlifting because, in 1987, the IWF World Championship for Women took place here. It was the first time women could compete for an International Weightlifting Federation world title.

If you're interested in doing more than watching, Kennedy encourages you to ask how to get started. She said they can get you signed up with a local gym to learn the basis Olympic lift. Then, if you'd like to continue, USA Weightlifting holds combines around the country. Information on those events will be available this weekend.

Events are scheduled from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Single-day passes are available for $15 and weekend passes are available for $40. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit teamusa.org.
