Ponce Inlet, FL - It took a while, but Volusia County finally has its first shark bite victims of the year.
Volusia County Beach Safety says both incidents happened on a dreary Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start to summer.
Neither victim suffered serious injuries, according to VCBS Captain Tammy Malphurs.
"A particular lemon shark was very unhappy about being caught," Malphurs added. "A little after 10 a.m. [yesterday], a 52 year old man from Mount Dora was fishing in Ponce Inlet inside the Lighthouse Point Park [when] he caught a three-foot shark."
That fisherman released the shark (shown in the picture above), but the shark got its revenge when that happened, per Malphurs.
"It turned around and bit his foot, causing minor injuries," Malphurs stated. "He was not transported. The shark left the scene unharmed."
The other reported shark bite happened on Saturday to a 12-year-old boy from Gainesville as he was in the ocean near the Daytona Beach Boardwalk.
"He had minor injuries but was transported for precautionary reasons," Malphurs noted.
So far this holiday weekend, eight people have been rescued by VCBS lifeguards. Two others were arrested for theft.
