New Smyrna Beach, FL - An 18-month-old boy is found unresponsive in a pond near his family's home.

According to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, the toddler, identified as Levi Thomas, got out of his family's Cresthill Lane home and was later found in a backyard pond last night (May 14th).

Deputies got the call just before 6:30 p.m. after he was found by his mother, who performed CPR until first responders got there.

Levi was later pronounced dead at AdventHealth Daytona Beach.

VCSO says that the initial investigation found that Levi left the house through a dog door while his mother was briefly out of the room.

When she returned, she noticed he was missing and she began to search around the house.

Eventually, she found him in the pond, which is surrounded by sloping ground.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office sent its condolences to the family.

"Please keep this hurting family in your prayers tonight as they grieve a loss that most of us cannot imagine," Sheriff Mike Chitwood said.
