Flagler Beach, FL-Heat and humidity are on the rise as summer kicks into high gear here. The forecast is for highs in the 90's but the "feels like" temp will be in the triple digits. Flagler Beach Police Chief Captain Matt Doughney is on a mission to spread the word to visitors and residents alike on how to be safe.

Drinking more fluids is the best way to prevent most heat-related distress. Doughney emphasizes that does not mean alcoholic or sugary drinks. Water is your best friend.

Doughney advises to dress for the weather. Wearing lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing will keep you more comfortable.

Although anyone at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others. Doughney suggests checking regularly on at-risk adults, whether they are seniors or have a physical or mental illness.

Doughney said don't forget about your pets. If you're feeling warm, so are they.

The best thing for people and pets alike when it's hot is to stay as cool as you can. Don't overdo it outdoors whether you're working or playing. Rest often in shady areas and use sunblock if you are out in the sun.
