Starting in August, Florida Will Phase In New Drivers Licenses & ID Cards

Posted

Florida - Soon, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) will begin phasing in new driver licenses and ID cards.

In August, the FLHSMV will issue the new cards and by December, the cards will be available online and at every service center in the state. The cards will feature a new design that is more secure. The fraud protection elements include redundant data, ultraviolet (UV) ink and optically variable designs.

Along with color and image design changes, the ID photo will appear 4 times on the card, and new headers will be color-coded depending on the type of license.

There are also several new designations available which can be found in the chart below.

Sexual predators will have, in blue writing, "Sexual Predator" spelled out and sexual offenders will have “943.0435 F.S.” indicated on their license. Motorcycle endorsements will now be designated as an "A" or an "O" on the front and as an “A-MTRCL Also” or “O-MTRCL Only” on the back.

Now, numbers will appear in front of the name, expiration date, sex, and height, a requirement by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.

The FLHSMV says that you only need to replace your current license or ID card if you need to change the information on it such as your name or address, or if it is expired. Current cards, as long as they are not expired, can still be used.

In August, the cards will be available at the local service centers mentioned in the chart below. By the end of December, you can renew your card online here.
