South Daytona, FL – According to a South Daytona Police Department release, officers tased and then shot a reportedly suicidal man who charged them with a knife.

On Saturday at around 8:20 AM, police responded to an apartment complex on Banana Cay Drive in reference to a 31-year-old suicidal man, Chad Murray. According to police, Murray threatened to have taken medication in an overdose. Murray was reportedly upset over a domestic relationship that had ended.

Murray’s ex-girlfriend, Debra Sinniger, reported Murray to the police and told officers that he may arm himself with a knife if police make contact with him. Upon Sinniger letting the officers into the apartment, Murray confronted and charged them with a weapon in hand.

One officer deployed his Taser, but Murray kept charging. Another officer then fired his gun to stop Murray. The officers were then able to wrestle Murray to the ground despite him being combative. Officers were able to handcuff Murray and seek medical attention for his injuries.

According to police, Murray’s injuries are non-life-threatening at this point. Murray was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment.

Murray has since been charged with resisting an officer with violence on a warrant out of Miami and Aggravated Assault with a deadly weapon for Saturday’s incident. The officer who fired his gun has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the FDLE and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. This is a standard procedure.
