Smoke Leads Daytona Beach Firefighters To Unreported House Fire

Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Beach Fire Department (DBFD) caught an unreported fire by following smoke to a Daytona Beach home.

On the way back to the station from a different call, firefighters saw smoke coming from the Pelican Bay neighborhood. Firefighters searched the neighborhood and found a house with smoke coming from the windows on Tropic Bird Ct.

A 911 call was not made before the firefighters responded.

"When the firefighters arrived, they found an adult woman laying in front of the house on the ground. They quickly ran to her aid and carried her a safe distance away from the fire where they were able to treat her," says Sasha Staton, a Public Information Officer with the DBFD. "She did have some affects from smoke inhalation and she was transported to the hospital."

The home is being rented by a husband and wife, but only the wife was at home at the time of the fire. The home is believed to have sustained $40,000 in damage.

With backup, the fire was put out and it did not affect any other homes in the area. Firefighters believe the fire was set on purpose with matches. The matches "were intentionally set and placed throughout the house at several different locations within the house such as the kitchen, living room and some of the bedrooms," said Staton.

There is an investigation into the suspected arson by the State Fire Marshall.
