Daytona Beach, FL - Daytona Beach Police Chief and Sheriff-elect Mike Chitwood was on WNDB's Marc Bernier Show on Friday, where he said he intends to get Volusia deputies a pay raise once he's in office.

During the conversation, Chitwood said he's been conducting interviews with deputies and is finding that a lot of them feel like they aren't being paid enough. But, he added, they just want to be paid the same as deputies in other counties. "They want parity," said Chitwood. "And I don't think they're asking a lot."

"When you pay animal control and code enforcement more money than you pay your police officers, who are sworn to protect us, who go through thousands upon thousands of hours of training... I think you're sending a message that you're really devaluing law enforcement in the county when you do that," said Chitwood.

Chitwood also discussed what will happen with the Police Department once he leaves. Ultimately, the decision's up to the city manager, Jim Chisholm. But, Chitwood does expect Chisholm to name Deputy Chief Craig Capri as the interim chief. And if Capri does a good job, which Chitwood expects him to, Chitwood says Chisholm may offer Capri the position.
