Ormond Beach, FL - A semi-truck driver who stopped to help a victim of a hit-and-run crash on I-95 has died after another vehicle crashed into him and the car of people he was trying to help.

The original crash occurred around 1:30 AM Tuesday near mile marker 277 in Ormond Beach as an unidentified red vehicle driving northbound came up behind a 2011 Toyota SUV driven by a 40-year-old South Carolina woman.

The red vehicle attempted to switch lanes when it crashed into the back of the Toyota SUV, sending it from the middle lane to the median and into the guardrail. The Toyota flipped on its right side and the unidentified red vehicle kept driving.

The semi-truck driver, 59-year-old Efrain Merced of Port St. Lucie, was driving southbound on I-95 when he stopped on the shoulder to help the wrecked car. A 2016 Toyota sedan, driven by a 24-year-old New Jersey man, was traveling northbound and crashed into the Toyota SUV and Merced.

Merced died at the scene of the crash while the others involved were taken to Florida Hospital Flagler with minor injuries. All northbound lanes were shut down until around 7:30 AM Tuesday.

The crash is still under investigation.
