Volusia County, FL - This weekend's back-to-school tax holiday gives families an opportunity to save money while stocking up on clothes that fit the new school uniform policy.

"The tax holiday this year is only 3 days," said Nany Wait, Director of Community Information for Volusia County Schools. "It starts August 5th and goes through August 7th. That's an opportunity for parents to purchase their school supplies or clothing without having to pay a sales tax."

When it comes to bottoms, what's already in your closet will probably work. Pants, shorts, skorts, and skirts need to be black, navy, or tan. According to Wait, plain blue or black jeans will work too.

For shirts, the county-wide color is white. Each school has been allowed to pick 2 additional shirt colors. School colors can be found at MyVolusiaSchools.org. Shirts must be collared, polo or oxford style button down. Dresses are only acceptable if they are polo-style. All tops can be short or long-sleeved, but only small logos are acceptable.

Jackets and hoodies of any color can be worn, but hoods and hats aren't allowed inside buildings. Students who are wearing a jacket will be expected to have clothes underneath that fit within the uniform policy.

Elementary and Middle-School students must wear close-toe and close-heel shoes. High School students will be allowed to wear sandals. The policy says sandals have to be safe and appropriate. According to Wait, "flip-flops were not something that the school board really wanted to see, but they didn't get specific in the policy on exactly what type of sandal is permitted."

Wait recommends that anyone with questions visit the county school website.
