Port Orange Receives Grant for DUI Checkpoint

Port Orange, FL - Police will be conducting a DUI checkpoint this weekend thanks to a grant given by FDOT.

Port Orange Police Department tells us they will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on Friday between 10:00 pm and 2:00 am in the 90 block of Dunlawton Avenue near Dunlawton Square.

This checkpoint comes after police received a $12,000 DUI and Impaired Driving Enforcement grant through the Florida Department of Transportation.

"This is the first time that we've received a grant for a DUI checkpoint in the past 15 years," said Evan Doyle, spokesperson for the Port Orange Police Department. "In the last few years, we have seen a pretty significant increase in DUI related arrests and crashes. So our goal for this is to educate our community and hopefully reduce the number of both DUI and impaired driving arrests and crashes."

According to Doyle, the last DUI checkpoint in May saw 790 vehicles pass through with 158 being stopped for further contact, none leading to a DUI arrest.
