Parkland Students Holding Gun Control Rally In Daytona

Daytona Beach, FL - The push by students at the Florida high school where 17 people were killed on Valentine's Day to change gun laws is coming to Daytona Beach this weekend.

At least one student from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland will be involved in a rall this Sunday afternoon at City Island Library. It's scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m., according to the organizers at March For Our Lives.

Hundreds of people attended a similar rally in the Tampa area yesterday, according to our partners at the Florida News Network.

The rally will feature a panel that is set to discuss change to gun laws and how to "stand up to the NRA" - referring to the National Rifle Association - in hopes to influence voters and electoral candidates to support background checks and a ban against high capacity magazines and assault rifles.

However, this rally is not the only change MSD students and families are after.

15 survivors are filing suit against Broward County, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, Superintendent Robert Runcie and the law enforcement officers who responded to the shooting that eventually led to the arrest of Nikolas Cruz.

“This lawsuit should not be misconstrued in any way as a shot at law enforcement. That’s not what this is,” said Solomon Radner, a civil rights attorney representing the survivors. “This is a shot at specific law enforcement officials who failed the students on that particular day.”

The suit comes after they say law enforcement "failed them" by not acting quick enough, saying there were a few points during the shooting law enforcement could have stepped in and prevented more deaths.

"We deserve more from our law enforcement and they could have ended the massacre before a lot more people died that day," said Audrey Diaz, a survivor of the shooting.

The suit will also discuss the mishandling of 911 calls during the shooting when calls were routed to the Coral Springs Communications Center instead of the Broward County Sheriff's Office, the primary police provider for Parkland.
