Orange City, FL - A traffic stop inside Orange City limits leads to the arrest of an Orlando man for giving Xanax to his girlfriend's 10-year-old son.

30-year-old Alexandre Correa Da Silva was booked at Volusia County Jail early this morning, hours after officers pulled over his 2016 Hyundai sport utility vehicle for a speeding violation.

Orange City Police Department Lieutenant Jason Sampsell says it all started around 9:45 last night when one of their officers spotted Correa Da Silva going 65 miles per hour in a 40 MPH zone on the northbound side of South Volusia Avenue near West Ohio Avenue.

"As the officer attempted a traffic stop, Correa Da Silva took evasive action and started driving recklessly by weaving in and out of traffic," Sampsell added. "Correa Da Silva turned into a parking lot in the 800 block of Volusia Avenue. Due to the one way entry/exit of the parking area, he was unable to elude the officer any further."

While that officer called others in for backup, more officers were heading to the home of Correa Da Silva's girlfriend on West Ohio after she called to file a complaint, per Sampsell.

"Further investigation revealed Correa Da Silva had just left his girlfriend’s house when he was observed speeding," Sampsell stated. "Investigation at the residence determined Correa Da Silva’s girlfriend came home from work to find Correa Da Silva passed out on the bed with pills lying next to him."

According to the arrest report, that's when the 10-year-old told his mother that Correa Da Silva gave him some "Tums" which tasted bad.

"The child initially spit out the pill due to the poor taste," Sampsell noted. "Correa Da-Silva told the juvenile to place another pill on a nacho chip to help with the taste and swallow it. Correa Da Silva then told the child and his sister to go to bed."

After officers discovered the "Tums" were Xanax, Correa confessed and apologized, saying he wanted the boy to "chill" because he was on a "sugar rush" from eating chocolate.

Correa Da Silva is held without bond on a slew of charges, including drug possession, resisting an officer, driving under the influence, fleeing/eluding police and child abuse.
