Daytona Beach, FL - License plate reader technology helps the Volusia County Sheriff's Office track down a stolen vehicle and the Orlando man who allegedly took it, but not before a wild chase which literally saw sparks fly on Interstate 4.

26-year-old Jervaughn A. Bonner is held on eight separate charges under a total bond of $31,000 following the early morning incident near Daytona Beach, including grand theft of a motor vehicle, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and two counts of child abuse.

The latter charges are because a missing 15-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy were found in the stolen 2018 Ford car Bonner was driving, according to VCSO spokesman Andrew Gant.

"The 15-year-old was returned to her mother," Gant added. "The 4-year-old, who was found in the front seat without a seatbelt or a child restraint seat, was placed in the care of the [Florida] Department of Children and Families. There were no injuries to the children or any of the deputies involved."

It all started around 12:10 a.m. when the Ford tripped a license plate reader on International Speedway Boulevard in Daytona Beach. Deputies in the area soon found the Ford waiting on a red light at the ISB and Nova Road intersection.

"One deputy pulled alongside the car while another deputy exited his vehicle and ordered Bonner to put his hands up," Gant noted. "The children in the vehicle weren’t visible at the time."

According to VCSO, that's when Bonner made eye contact with the deputies and hit the accelerator, ramming into a patrol car before heading south on Nova at an estimated speed of between 80 to 100 miles per hour.

From there, Bonner made a U-turn and went west on ISB, where Gant says he ran across stop sticks dropped by deputies at the White Street intersection, deflating the driver's side tires.

"[Bonner] continued west on ISB, past [Interstate] 95 and Tomoka Farms Road, hitting another set of stop sticks about a half-mile west of Tomoka Farms," Gant stated. "Bonner headed onto [Interstate] 4 [West] with his tires deflated, hitting a guardrail along the way."

Sparks flew from the front driver’s side rim as the tire disintegrated, eventually leading to him pulling into the median and taking off on foot along with the 15-year-old, according to Gant.

"A deputy saw her trying to hide in some bushes," Gant stated. "She was pulled from the shrubbery and placed in a patrol car while a K-9 unit looked for Bonner, ultimately apprehending him on the arm."

"He told deputies he heard the K-9 warnings and heard the dog come near him but didn’t think he was going to find him," Gant stated.

Besides the charges above, Bonner is also charged with fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, custodial interference, driving with a suspended license and resisting an officer without violence.

Volusia County Jail records show Bonner was also booked in October 2015 on a battery charge.
