NWS: May 2018 Rain Totals Second-Highest On Record

Daytona Beach, FL - It's been a crazy wet month in the Daytona Beach area and the latest numbers from the National Weather Service prove it.

NWS-Melbourne tells us 12.41 inches of rain have fallen at Daytona Beach International Airport this May, most of it coming in the past few weeks.

NWS Meteorologist Tony Cristaldi says yesterday's record rainfall at DBIA pushed this year's May rain total just above 1976's 12.33 inches for the second-rainiest ever.

"Today's the last day of the month, so we'll add some [rain] amounts to the [total]," Cristaldi added. "It all depends on where exactly the storms set up."

The only May where DBIA has seen more rain than that is 2009 when 22.33 inches fell.

Yesterday alone added 2.27 inches at DBIA, breaking the record for that date of 1.56 inches set in 1930.

The heaviest rain - along with frequent lightning - fell from Spruce Creek north to Daytona Beach, causing wet roads and flooding in some parts.

NWS data also shows nearly two inches falling in Palm Coast and similar totals for other parts of Flagler and Volusia.

The average rainfall for the Daytona Beach area in May is 2.96 inches, according to Cristaldi.

Expect more rain going into the weekend, with rain chances of at least 50% today and tomorrow. The weekend should be considerably drier, with rain chances only going as high as 30%.
