New Smyrna Beach, FL - A surfer has been bitten by a shark in New Smyrna Beach.

It occurred by the 27th Avenue beach approach when the 14-year-old surfer from Ohio was reportedly bitten on the foot while wading in chest deep water.

According to Captain Tammy Malphurs with Volusia County Beach Safety, the teen received minor lacerations on his foot and was not taken by paramedics to the hospital.

The shark was not seen by other beachgoers or lifeguards, according to Malphurs

This is the third shark bite reported by Beach Safety so far this year. However, this isn't the only danger at beaches in Volusia County this week.

Malphurs also told us that lifeguards have rescued 73 people from rip currents today and over 140 since Sunday, mostly due to dangerous rip currents.
