Daytona Beach, FL - A 45-year-old man from New Jersey is being held on a number of charges including reporting a false bomb, possession of a hoax bomb and several drug charges. His actions caused A-1-A to be shut down for hours.

David B. Allen said he had a hand grenade, which led to a six-hour police stand-off at the Ocean Breeze Club, just north of Seabreeze Boulevard.

Officers responded around 7:30 a.m. to reports that Allen was making suicidal threats and throwing furniture from his fifth-floor room on to the balcony.

The hotel was evacuated for safety. Police sent up a drone, which confirmed that the hand grenade was not operational. Allen requested a soda just before 1 p.m. A Taser was used to take him down.

Allen is charged with: False Report of Bomb/Explosion on Public Property, Possession of a Hoax Bomb, two counts of Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Criminal Mischief of More than a $1,000, Possession of Cannabis, Less than 20 Grams, Possession of Paraphernalia and Possession of Cocaine.

Volusia County Beach Safety and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad assisted DBPD during this effort. Allen remains in jail without bond.
