UPDATE (08-06-18): In a statement released by NASCAR, Brian France says he'll be taking an indefinite leave of absence. “I apologize to our fans, our industry and my family for the impact of my actions last night," France said in an email sent to WNDB News by NASCAR officials. "Effective immediately, I will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from my position to focus on my personal affairs." NASCAR Vice Chairman and Executive Vice President Jim France now assumes the role of interim Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Earlier reporting below. Sag Harbor, NY - The Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of NASCAR is out of jail on his own recognizance after his arrest in a small New York village on charges of driving while intoxicated and drug possession. Brian France was taken into custody around 7:30 p.m. last night (August 5th) by the Sag Harbor Police Department. Sag Harbor is located in Suffolk County, part of the Hamptons region of New York state. According to SHPD, France was pulled over after blowing through a stop sign while driving a 2017 Lexus northbound on Main Street near Wharf Street.   It was during that traffic stop when France was found in an "intoxicated condition" and also discovered with oxycodone pills on his person during a search, per SHPD. The 56-year-old France was released after his arraignment earlier this morning. Officials with NASCAR have yet to comment publicly on his arrest. This article will be updated if they do.
