Mesh Covers Homeless Hangout Under Daytona Pier

Posted
Daytona Beach, FL - One of the most notorious hangout spots for the homeless in Daytona Beach is apparently no more. City workers have wrapped bright orange mesh around a big section of the pilings holding up the Daytona Beach Pier, preventing anyone from being able to go between them. Also in place is a warning sign telling visitors that there's falling debris in the area and they need to stay away.
It's not clear if there actually is any falling debris coming from the pier. We've reached out to the city for clarification. The area that's been meshed off is close to the Main Street beach approach and was known as a camping spot for homeless, but new regulations approved by elected officials in Daytona Beach and Volusia County have allowed city police and Beach Safety officers to be more stringent in removing the homeless from under the pier as well as the Boardwalk and public beach parks. Daytona Beach city commissioners are getting ready to vote next week on an ordinance restricting panhandling throughout Daytona Beach, another move officials say is meant to enhance public safety and clean up the city's image.
