FDOT Hosting Public Meeting On Proposed U.S. 1 Roundabout

Palm Coast, FL - The Florida Department of Transportation will hold a two-hour public open house Thursday (August 9th) about a proposal to drop a roundabout on U.S. 1 at Matanzas Woods Parkway in Palm Coast.

It starts at 5 p.m. at the Palm Coast Community Center on 305 Palm Coast Parkway NE. FDOT spokesperson Steve Olsen says roundabouts are a fairly new phenomenon to Florida and the open house will give the community a chance to ask project team representatives about roundabouts and their safety benefits. The proposed two-lane roundabout would not bring traffic to a complete halt but it would slow it down to around 30 miles per hour so all drivers can maneuver safely through the intersection. FDOT also has plans to provide additional pedestrian safety features at that intersection. Olson also said that the severity of T-bone crashes is proven to be less with the use of a roundabout and that FDOT wants to use the meeting to keep traffic moving safely through that part of U.S. 1 in the future. Takeaways will be available for those that want more information. There will also be comment cards for those that want to share their concerns or approval. There's also plans in the works to create a similar roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Old Dixie Highway in Palm Coast, a T-shaped intersection which has seen more than its fair share of serious crashes over the years.
