Flagler Beach, FL - Matanzas High School will be the first school in the Flagler County School District to establish a mentoring program called "Men in the Making."

The organization of this club was led by Vernon Orndorff, Executive Director of Leadership Development for Flagler Schools, and Dr. Earl Johnson, who's the principal of Matanzas High School.

The purpose of this pilot program is to help students who need the extra support in and outside of the classroom. Twenty 9th and 10th graders are expected to participate in the first session of "Men in the Making."

"After-school activities are always a challenge in Flagler County because of transportation issues, " says Dr. Johnson, so the students will meet with their mentor for a half-hour each week during the lunch period.

This 3-year program is designed to teach students life skills and character traits.

The ultimate goal of this program is to have "mentees" become "mentors" and to hopefully incorporate young women in the years to come.
