New Smyrna Beach, FL - A 69-year-old Winter Park man lost his life after getting caught in a rip current. Volusia County Beach Safety Captain Tammy Malphurs reports the incident happened around 10:30 this morning (May 8) near the Beachway Avenue access.

Malphurs reports that the man was swimming with a friend in an area with no lifeguards, almost 400 yards away from the nearest tower. She said the red flag was being flown due to the rip currents.

Lifeguards were able to pull the man out of the water and administer CPR but it was too late. The man, who has not been identified pending next of kin notification, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Malphurs has her standard warning for beachgoers: always swim near a lifeguard.
