Port Orange, FL - One man is dead and another is critically hurt following a plane crash at a gated aviation community.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office says it happened around 7:30 last night at the Spruce Creek Fly-In community off Taylor Road.

VCSO spokesperson Laura Williams tells us the actual crash happened in the 2500 block of Taxiway Echo.

"The plane, carrying two men, narrowly missed hitting a home," Williams added. "No injuries were reported on the ground."

The plane crashed into an empty lot.

One of those men died at the scene. Paramedics took the other to Halifax Health Medical Center. It's not clear which was the pilot and the passenger.

VCSO hasn't said at this point what kind of plane it was, but did note that it was a small single-engine type.

Deputies and detectives will be on-scene throughout the night and into the morning, according to Williams.

"Rescue officials are trying to identify the victims and notify their families," Williams noted. "A National Transportation Safety Board representative has already been on scene tonight and will resume the investigation [today]."

The Federal Aviation Administration is also about to join the investigation, per Williams.
