DeLand, FL - A Daytona Beach man faces reckless driving, DUI, and child abuse charges after an 11-month-old girl was thrown to the floorboard as the result of a high-speed crash in DeLand he caused. At approximately 10:47 PM on Saturday, March 31, Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) responded to a crash with injuries at the intersection of West New Hampshire Ave. and South Adelle Ave. in DeLand. Two witnesses told investigators that they were sitting at the light when they saw a Ford Crown Victoria approaching the intersection going approximately 80 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone. A man, Luis Ramirez, was turning left into the intersection when the left front of the Ford violently crashed into the front of his Saturn station wagon. The Saturn ultimately spun and collided with a nearby Chevy Tahoe. The two witnesses ran from their car to check on the occupants of the totaled Ford and Saturn. The witnesses saw 30-year-old Antione Jerrod Ware behind the wheel of the Ford and an 11-month-old infant crying, partially under the passenger’s seat. Family members came to the scene to take the infant to the hospital. Ramirez reported minor injuries to his wrist and stomach. FHP investigators say that they noticed a strong alcoholic odor on Ware’s breath. It was also noted that Ware urinated himself, seemed unsteady on his feet, had bloodshot and glassy eyes, and refused sobriety and breath tests. Ware was ultimately arrested and charged with reckless driving, DUI with property damage, and child abuse.
