DeLand, FL - A Volusia County middle school is back to normal after police made an arrest near the campus, causing a brief lockdown.

It happened around this morning (April 4th) near DeLand Middle School, according to Volusia County Schools spokesperson Kelly Schulz.

"At approximately 8:57 this morning, Deland Middle staff was alerted to a possible threat headed toward the campus," Schulz noted. "They immediately put the campus on a Code Red lockdown."

DeLand Police Department Lieutenant Juan Millan says the lockdown happened after a student told officers about someone making threats to shoot up the campus.

"Soon after the threats were made, [a] DeLand School Resource Officer confronted a male subject at the rear of the school gate," Millan noted. "The male took flight and a short foot pursuit took place."

Officers caught him quickly before he could get on the campus, finding no weapons on his person, per Millan.

The lockdown was lifted at 9:09 a.m., per Schulz, with the district sending a robocall to notify parents of what happened.

"All students acted in accordance with our safety procedures and were safe at all times," Schulz noted. "We are very proud of our students."

It's not clear who the threat was against, according to DeLand PD.

The suspect has not been identified at this time by police.
