Flagler County, FL – A man has been arrested after admitting to Flagler County Sheriff’s deputies that he had stolen several flags in Flagler County over the past two years, including the American Flag recently reported stolen from the Indian Trails sports complex in Palm Coast. On Sunday, deputies helped 34-year-old Charles Cowart Jr. catch two horses loose on County Road 305. When the horses were secured, Cowart told deputies that he had “something to show them” at his home. Cowart went into his home and came out with an American flag, the same flag that had been stolen earlier that day from the Indian Trails sports complex. Cowart showed deputies a total of 12 flags that he had stolen over the past two years.

“This guy obviously had a guilty conscience,” said Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. “Our deputies went above and beyond to assist him and I’d like to believe that is why he felt the need to come clean and return the stolen property. We will not tolerate any form of theft in Flagler County. I’m glad that the flags were returned to their rightful owners. I look forward to seeing the flags back up in the air where they belong.” Cowart was arrested on 3 felony charges for violating his probation as well as Petit Theft and Grand Theft. Cowart has previously been arrested for aggravated assault, contempt of court, shoplifting, burglary, kidnapping, disorderly intoxication, cruelty to animals, and DUI in Flagler County. He remains at the Flagler County Detention Facility with no bond.
