Local 77-Year-Old Woman Dies Near Main St. Pier

UPDATE: Volusia County Beach Safety identifies the drowning victim as 76-year-old Ena Chaves of Daytona Beach. The results of a preliminary autopsy report show that Chaves died of medical issues. Results of a toxicology report are pending.

Daytona Beach, FL - Volusia County Beach Safety Deputy Chief of Operations Aaron Jenkins is reporting that lifeguards pulled a 77-year-old woman out of the water just south of the Main Street Pier around 2 p.m. today (June 23).

The lifeguard responded to the woman floating face-down and unconscious in chest deep water. Lifeguards brought the woman to shore and began CPR. She was taken to Halifax Hospital and was pronounced dead sometime later.

The woman has not been identified pending notification of next of kin as the investigation continues.

Jenkins also reported that the yellow flag was flown today due to a moderate rip current risk this afternoon. Even with light surf lifeguards rescued 14 people from the surf.
