Daytona Beach, FL - A homeless man the Daytona Beach Police Department has been trying to find for a week is now in handcuffs. Officers booked 43-year-old Daniel M. Deperte at the Volusia County Jail early this morning, charging him with loitering and prowling at a property on Nautilus Avenue around 9 p.m. Sunday. DBPD has sent out numerous Twitter posts in the last week about Deperte, claming he's been walking around the southern part of beachside, knocking on the doors of homes and businesses to ask for money.
Deperte is also a suspect in several burglaries in the area, but he's not facing a charge for that as of yet, per DBPD. According to the arrest report, a woman living at the Nautilus Avenue home called 911 saying she recognized Deperte from the DBPD Twitter photos when he rang her doorbell claiming to be looking for a lost dog. Deperte was found by an officer a few minutes later and detained after he wasn't able to give that officer any identification, per the report. He also allegedly refused to identify himself until he was told he'd go to jail if he did not. The report also notes that Deperte admitted to being in the area to get money from people and that he needs money to support his crack cocaine habit.
