Daytona Beach, FL-Gas prices continued to climb higher in the past week here, but AAA Florida says that's what happens at this time of year as refineries switch out fuel blends for the summer ahead.

The average price for a gallon of self-serve unleaded regular in the Daytona Beach area rose about 7 cents in the past week. The average price for that gallon of gas here as of Sunday was $1.89.

A year ago that same gallon of gas would set you back $2.45.

"Gas prices continue on an upward trend, which is normal for this time of year," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA - The Auto Club Group. "More motorists are hitting the road for spring vacations, increasing the demand for gasoline, while the supply has begun falling due to refinery maintenance season. These factors, coupled with rising oil prices, have led to the highest weekly price increase since last August. Prices will likely rise another 20-30 cents by Memorial Day weekend, but fortunately should remain well below year-ago levels."

The average price in Florida for a gallon of self-serve unleaded is now $1.91. The nationwide average is $1.92.
