Open Seat Filled By Former DeLand Commissioner

DeLand, FL - An old face becomes the newest on the DeLand City Commission.

Charles Paiva was appointed by the other four commission members during yesterday's meeting (August 13th) to fill the open Seat 2.

“I very much look forward to continuing the success we have and will continue to have as a city,” Paiva added afterward.

The seat became available after Jeff Hunter - who was elected in 2016 - was suspended by Florida Governor Rick Scott following his arrest on a drug charge earlier this summer.

This will be the third time Paiva serves on the city commission. He was initially elected in 2001 and stayed until 2005, then re-elected in 2007 and stayed until 2016.

Paiva beat out 12 other applicants for the job and is set to finish Hunter's term, which expires in November 2020, unless Hunter is reinstated by the governor.

He will be sworn into office before the August 20th DeLand City Commission meeting.
