Florida Primary Election Night: The Local Results

Daytona Beach, FL - Primary Election Day sees several big local races decided before the November general election, while others will have to wait until then for a victor.

HOUSE CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT 6 (REPRESENTS ALL OF VOLUSIA & FLAGLER, PARTS OF LAKE AND ST. JOHNS COUNTIES)

REPUBLICAN: Michael Waltz defeats Fred Costello and John Ward to win the nomination of the seat currently held by Ron DeSantis, who defeated state Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam for the GOP gubernatorial nomination.

DeSantis will battle the Democrat nominee - Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum - for the right to replace Rick Scott in the governor's mansion. Scott easily won his GOP primary challenge tonight and can now fully focus on defeating incumbent U.S. Senator Bill Nelson in November.

DEMOCRAT: Nancy Soderberg wins a three-person battle over Stephen Sevigny and John Upchurch. She'll face Waltz in November.

FLORIDA HOUSE RACES

DISTRICT 26 (DAYTONA BEACH): Incumbent Patrick Henry wins easily over challenger Percy Williamson for the Democrat nomination, while Elizabeth Fetterhoff defeats Michael Cantu by just 60 votes for the GOP nomination.

DISTRICT 27 (DELTONA): Carol Lawrence wins above 70% of the vote to defeat Neil Henrichsen in the Democrat primary and face incumbent Republican David Santiago in November.

VOLUSIA COUNTY COUNCIL

AT-LARGE: Former Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson is back in public office, defeating L. Ronald Durham by over 30 percentage points. He'll take over for term-limited Joyce Cusack in January.

DISTRICT 1: Incumbent Pat Patterson loses narrowly to Barbara Girtman and barely manages to hold on to second place over Jeff Brower in a four-person race, forcing a run-off in November.

DISTRICT 5: Incumbent Fred Lowry holds onto his seat easily, defeating Dan Hunt by double-digits.

VOLUSIA COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD

DISTRICT 1: Al Bouie and Jamie M. Haynes are heading to a November run-off after Dr. John Hill leaves to run for a seat on the West Volusia Hospital Authority.

DISTRICT 3: VCSB Chair Linda L. Cuthbert barely gets over the 50% + one vote margin in a four-person race to avoid a run-off in November.

DISTRICT 5: Melody Johnson takes the victory in a three-person race, but falls just under the margin needed to avoid a run-off. She'll face Ruben Colon in November.

FLAGLER COUNTY COMMISSION

DISTRICT 2: Chair Greg Hansen survives his GOP primary challenger, Abby Romaine, winning 64% of the vote. He'll face independent Dennis McDonald in the general election.

DISTRICT 4: Incumbent Nate McLaughlin falls to Joe Mullins in the Republican primary. Mullins will face independent Jane Gentile-Youd in the general election.

FLAGLER COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD

DISTRICT 2: Vice-Chair Janet McDonald will face John Fischer for a run-off in November after taking nearly 41% of the vote to Fischer's 32%. Carl Jones finished third at 27%.

DISTRICT 4: Chair Trevor Tucker hangs on to his seat over Paul Anderson by a 56% to 44% margin, winning the election outright.

DAYTONA BEACH CITY COMMISSION

ZONE 1: Incumbent Ruth Trager dominates a five-person field but her 35% isn't enough to avoid the run-off in November versus Danny Fuqua. He beat Anne Ruby by 16 votes for the second spot.

ZONE 3: Kelly White's seat will be filled by either Amy Pyle or Quanita May as both finished top two in a five-person race.

HOLLY HILL CITY COMMISSION

MAYOR: Chris Via - the current seat-holder in District 4 - dominates Mike Chuven, winning over 70% of the vote to replace John Penny.

DISTRICT 2: Incumbent Penny Currie coasted to a win over Joan Burnett with 65% of the vote.

DISTRICT 3: John Danio hangs on to his seat, beating Karen Louise Van Dusen 57% to 43%.

AMENDMENTS: City voters approved four-year staggered city commissioner terms by a narrow margin (51% to 48%) and also OK'd the elimination of the Civil Services Act by a bigger margin (55% to 45%)

NEW SMYRNA BEACH CITY COMMISSION

MAYOR: Jim Hathaway's seat will be filled in November by Russ Owen (40.2%) or Lisa Martin (21.2%) after both finished in the top two of a six-person race.

ZONE 1: Peggy Belflower (29.9%) and Michael Kolody (26.8%) will face off against one another for Judy Reiker's spot in November. Both candidates involved in a controversial campaign advertisement on Facebook finished in the bottom two in this race (Jessica Realin and John Redmond).

PORT ORANGE CITY COUNCIL

DISTRICT 2: Incumbent Chase Tramont hangs on to beat Sarah Jones by a 57% to 42% margin.
