Flagler Cleaning Lady Arrested For Fraud

Flagler Beach, FL - A cleaning lady is arrested after cutting checks for herself from her client's checkbook.

Flagler Beach Police Department arrested 59-year-old Karen Ubaldi Tuesday (August 7th) after she forged seven checks for herself totaling $4,250 from her client's checkbook.

The police were first tipped off about the forgery the day before (August 6th) when the client's son reported that Ubaldi, his mother's cleaning lady of several years, was writing out checks for herself without their approval.

The son became suspicious of the situation when a family friend who manages's his mother's finances inquired about checks made out to Ubaldi in large amounts.

He then checked his mother's checkbook and found that every other check was missing and he could not recall what they were issued out for.

Upon receiving copies of the checks, he found each one was cashed by Ubaldi and fraudulently signed with his name. He then checked the balancing log he fills out each time a check is issued and found the checks were entered into the log but not in his handwriting.

The son then provided Flagler Beach police three checks he did fill out for Ubaldi, showing the differences in signatures compared to the checks he reported as fraud.

According to the police narrative, this is not the first time Ubaldi was confronted by the son about fraudulent checks.

Three weeks prior she was confronted by him for the same thing and began to cry when asked, saying she didn't know why she did it. She asked him not to call the police, saying she would pay him back as she was expecting a large inheritance.

He didn't call the police the first time, saying his mother wanted to believe Ubaldi would pay back the amount.

She remains in Flagler County Jail this morning on $15,500 bond with seven felony forgery charges.
