Flagler Beach PD Reminds Beachgoers Of Laws Protecting Sea Turtles

Posted

Flagler Beach, FL - The Flagler Beach Police Department (FBPD) released a public service announcement reminding beachgoers about ordinances and laws protecting sea turtles in honor of the beginning of sea turtle nesting season.

The nesting season officially starts on May 1 and continues through October 31. Between 40,000 and 84,000 nests will be made during the season. Each egg has an incubation time of around 2 months, but only 1 in every 1,000 to 10,000 babies survive and become adults.

Flagler Beach City Ordinance 9-20 stipulates that campfires on the beach during the nesting season are not allowed from sunset to sunrise.

Florida State Law 379.2431 states that anyone who disturbs or destroys a nest, takes eggs or disturbs the turtles will be charged with a 3rd-degree felony.

If you have any questions about city and state laws, you are invited to contact FBPD Chief Matthew Doughney at 386-571-2023.
