Palm Coast, FL - Flagler County Administrator Craig Coffey recently met with Indian Trails Middle School’s Future Problem Solvers to discuss preparedness and citizens’ safety during hurricanes.
“I am always happy to meet with students who are interested in learning about government and how they can make things here better for everyone,” said Coffey. “These are our future leaders.”
Along with the help of teacher Jennifer Colindres, the seventh-grade Future Problem Solvers raised funds to lessen the financial burden on Hurricane Irma survivors. The group of students is dedicated to finding solutions to problems that affect their communities. The students are interested in learning how Flagler County Government communicates with the public and how they may get involved.
During his visit, Coffey supplied the group with Disaster Preparedness Guides, taught them how to find out if they live in an evacuation zone, and educated them on the importance of creating an individualized family plan. The students knew that “important papers” was one of the main things that should be included in a disaster kit.
“Having a ‘Go Kit’ is very important if you have to leave your home,” said Coffey.
“What is something you might not think to bring?” said Coffey. “What about extra batteries for your phones and devices? What about games – something to entertain yourself – because a shelter isn’t a very fun place.”
