Update:

DeLand, FL – A fiery crash just west of DeLand on Tuesday afternoon resulted in multiple fatalities, including 3 children.

According to FHP, 3 children and 1 adult woman were all killed in that accident when the vehicle rolled over and caught fire. The accident happened around 12:23 PM near the intersection of West New York Ave. and Grand Ave. The vehicle was still on fire when first responders arrived at the scene.

Officials say the accident happened when a 2001 Ford Explorer heading south on Grand Ave. stopped at a stop sign then pulled out in front of a Jeep Wrangler traveling eastbound on New York Ave. “The front of the Jeep struck the passenger side of the Ford SUV, the Jeep then overturned and caught fire,” said Sergeant Kim Montes, FHP Public Affairs Officer.

Montes went on to say, “a female driver and 3 children in the Jeep Wrangler all died on scene.”

There was also a pickup truck on the south side of the intersection facing northbound at the stop sign. After the initial collision between the Ford SUV and the Jeep Wrangler, the SUV went through the intersection and struck the front of the pickup truck. The driver of the pickup truck and the driver of the Ford SUV weren’t hurt.

East and westbound lanes of SR-44 were closed for hours as troopers investigated the crash. The road was reopened around 4 PM.

The woman and 3 children who tragically died in this accident have not yet been identified.  “We’ll work with the medical examiners office,” said Montes. “The vehicle was burned so we are attempting to locate a registered owner, and then [we will] attempt to find who was in that vehicle.”
