Volusia County, FL - FEMA was on the ground here Sunday and Monday taking a look at damage and what it will take to do cleanup.

The county's estimate for debris cleanup is $10 million, but FEMA officials are working to come up with their own estimate. County Councilmember Deb Denys says the formula is the feds pay for 75%, the state picks up 12 and a half percent and the county is on the hook for the rest out of the general fund. Denys says that's why the process may take longer than anyone would like just trying to be sure the right figure is reached.

A total of 8 FEMA teams were in the county on Sunday and Monday. 7 of those teams were focused on individual assistance and 1 team was focused on public assistance. Officials from the state and the local Property Appraisers Office accompanied those teams.

Denys says the cleanup cost for three hurricanes in the 2004 season was $40 million and it took years for the county to be completely reimbursed by FEMA. She emphasized the importance of Florida getting in line for FEMA money as soon as possible in light of the hurricane damage in places like North Carolina.

Denys was a guest on Daytona's Morning News on WNDB.
